Who Amir Salek is at Anthropic 2026: Google TPU founder for chips

Bloomberg confirmed on Friday that TPU program founder Amir Salek joined Anthropic’s compute team. The notes below split checkable staffing, buying, and the unpublished ship date.

On 21 August 2026 Bloomberg reported that Anthropic had hired Amir Salek, a founder of Google’s custom-chip program. The company confirmed on Friday that he is joining the compute team and will report to James Bradbury.

The searchable name is Amir Salek. He ran Google’s TPU business until 2022 and delivered the first seven generations. This is not a tapeout notice and not a volume date. What follows is only what can be checked in Bloomberg, Business Insider, TechCrunch, and the job posts.

5 August: silicon team confirmed Friday: Salek hire confirmed Multi-chip buying continues

What Bloomberg wrote on Friday

The story says Anthropic PBC hired Salek as it lays groundwork for making its own semiconductors. He joins the compute team at the company behind Claude. The lab still buys chips from Nvidia, Google, Amazon and others. Custom silicon is framed as a way to ease shortages and fit designs to its models — not as a completed supplier swap.

From a confirmed team to a named lead

  1. 1

5 August: the lab acknowledged an in-house silicon team

A spokesperson told Business Insider and TechCrunch that Anthropic is building a custom silicon team to co-design hardware and models so Claude can run faster and more efficiently at the scale customers need. The listing said the company works from the chip level with silicon partners and is deepening that investment.

  2. 2

The same notes keep the multi-chip line

Hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia and AMD remains central to scaling. That matches the 6 April compute note: Claude trains and runs on AWS Trainium, Google TPUs and NVIDIA GPUs so workloads can be matched to the chips best suited for them.

  3. 3

21 August: Salek lands on that line

Bloomberg says he reports to James Bradbury. After Google he was a senior managing director at Cerberus Capital Management; he also worked at Nvidia earlier. A person in the seat is not a scheduled first part.

01

This is not the same stage as OpenAI’s Jalapeño

Bloomberg wrote that OpenAI unveiled Jalapeño, co-developed with Broadcom, and plans to start using it later this year. Anthropic’s public record is a team and an executive, not a matching chip name or production window.

02

Buying is still in parallel

Bloomberg also reported an initial Fractile order of about $250 million, plus capacity deals with Riot Platforms and Volta Infra Holdings. Those are purchased parts and sites, not proof of an in-house tapeout.

03

The jobs describe spec-to-ramp work

Later listings name architecture freeze, RTL, verification, physical design, test insertion, tapeout and first-silicon debug. The TPM post says there is no process to inherit. Read that as a team at the start, not a line already turning.

The job text quoted by Business Insider said Anthropic works from the chip level with silicon partners and is deepening that investment by building a custom silicon team. The spokesperson framed the aim as making Claude faster and more efficient at the scale customers need.

# Anthropic silicon (public record, Aug 2026)
Hire: Amir Salek — compute team, reports to James Bradbury
Background: Google TPU lead through 2022; 7 generations; ex-Nvidia; Cerberus

Stack: AWS Trainium + Google TPU + NVIDIA GPU (Apr 6 note)
Open: no node, no foundry award, no ship date

Boundaries

“Founder” refers to Google’s custom-chip program, not a shipping Anthropic part
Bloomberg’s wording is a founder of Google’s custom chip program. Do not write that Anthropic already ships its own accelerator.
Jalapeño is a rival timetable, not Anthropic’s
OpenAI and Broadcom’s plan is written separately. Anthropic did not give a matching production date in the same report.
Near-term capacity is still largely rented
The April note committed multiple gigawatts of next-generation Google TPU capacity from 2027. The custom team is a multi-year bet on top of those contracts.

Questions worth checking

Who does Salek report to?

Bloomberg says the new role reports to James Bradbury on the compute team. A fuller English job title was not published.

When can an Anthropic chip ship in volume?

Public notes give no node, foundry award, or ship date. When the team was confirmed, Ars Technica wrote that key people were still being hired and benefits would take time. Samsung talks remain exploratory reporting.

Will it stop buying Nvidia or Google chips?

The line to the press is still multi-chip: AWS, Google, Nvidia and AMD stay central to scaling. The April compute note also matches workloads to Trainium, TPUs and GPUs.
