What Claude Cowork’s 2026 built-in browser is: side-panel web tasks
Anthropic added a side-panel browser isolated from your tabs. Below: the checkable launch note, the two web paths, and the Enterprise default date.
On 26 August 2026 Anthropic wrote that Claude Cowork’s desktop app now opens a browser in the side panel: when a task needs the web, Claude loads pages, reads them, clicks, and types.
The searchable story is the Claude Cowork built-in browser: web work no longer requires the Claude in Chrome extension. The same day, Claude in Chrome went generally available. The Decoder followed on 27 August.
What the official note said
The blog said many web tasks do not need your browser, only a browser. The built-in one is separate from your tabs, bookmarks, and passwords unless you import logins site by site. Enterprise admins could turn it on that day.
How the two web paths stack
-
1
Built-in browser for work you hand off
The side panel opens; Claude navigates, reads, clicks, and types. The blog’s examples: research for a report, or this month’s invoices from a vendor portal. Nothing from your own browser is shared unless you import it.
-
2
Claude in Chrome still owns the page you already have open
CRM, inbox, the doc in front of you still go through the extension. If you already use it, it stays the default; otherwise Claude uses the built-in browser. Switch in Settings → Cowork → Preferred browser.

The desktop app has to stay online
The built-in browser lives in the desktop app on macOS, Windows, and Linux (beta). Web or phone can still drive it if that app is open and online. Without the desktop app, Claude in Chrome remains the path.
Logins import site by site; bank and mail stay out by default
The blog: bring logins from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on macOS, and from Firefox on Windows and Linux. Banking, email, and single sign-on sites are left out unless you include them.
Prompt-injection risk matches the extension
Anthropic said hidden page instructions can still hijack an agent. The same safeguards as Claude in Chrome reduce the risk but do not erase it. Start on sites you trust.
This is not a daily-driver browser swap
It sits in the Cowork side panel to run web steps. It is not a Chrome or Safari replacement. The Decoder also stressed that it stays isolated from your own tabs.
| Claim | Checkable source | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Side-panel browser, no extension required | Anthropic blog, 26 Aug 2026 | Official product note |
| Pro / Max / Team this week; on by default once it arrives | Same post | A rollout, not one global second |
| Enterprise default-on on 10 Sep | Anthropic Help Center (browser setup) | Admins can still turn it off; tenant switch wins |
An agent filling a form in a side panel is not the same job as people talking over a board in a tab. If you only need voice and a whiteboard, the wbroom homepage opens a room without an account. Create and join steps live in create and join a room; no-account notes in privacy, no account. Heavy-suite trade-offs: wbroom vs Zoom + Miro.
Anthropic, 26 August 2026: a lot of web tasks don’t need your browser, just a browser — and now Claude has one. Once it reaches you, it is on by default: give Claude a task that involves a website and the browser opens on its own.

Import: Chrome, Edge, Firefox on macOS; Firefox on Windows/Linux

Enterprise: available; Help Center default-on date 2026-09-10
Boundaries
- “Nothing to install” means the extension, not the desktop app
- The built-in browser skips a Chrome add-on. It still needs the Claude desktop app open. On the web without that app, the blog still points at Claude in Chrome.
- Linux is still labeled beta
- The official note marks Linux desktop as beta. Do not read three platforms as equally mature.
- The safety line did not vanish
- Prompt injection is in the body. Safeguards “meaningfully reduce” risk; the company does not call it zero.
Questions worth checking
Is Anthropic shipping a standalone browser?
No. The note describes a browser embedded in the Cowork desktop side panel so the agent can run web steps. It is not a daily browsing product.
What if Claude in Chrome is already installed?
The blog says the extension keeps working and stays the default. Switch in Settings → Cowork → Preferred browser.
Is Enterprise already on by default?
The blog said admins could enable it that day. The Help Center says Enterprise starts off and becomes default-on on 10 September 2026 unless turned off. Use the organization switch.
