How to buy and activate a travel eSIM with Airalo: pick, pay, install
Buy an Airalo travel eSIM, install it on Wi-Fi, then turn on the line and roaming at your destination.
Landing without a local SIM queue, and without a daily roaming bill, is the job. Buy a travel eSIM from Airalo before you fly: pick a country, pay, install it on the phone, then turn data on at the destination.
People searching how to buy and activate a travel eSIM with Airalo want a checkable path. The steps below follow Airalo’s help center and the install guide last updated 20 August 2026: account, package, payment, install, connect.
Check three things before you buy
The phone must support eSIM
In Settings look for Add eSIM or Download SIM. Dial *#06#: an EID usually means eSIM hardware. Two phones with the same name can differ by market. Confirm on Airalo’s device list before you pay.
It must be carrier-unlocked
A locked contract phone will not take a third-party eSIM. On iPhone: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read No SIM restrictions. If unsure, ask your home carrier.
Install on stable Wi-Fi
Airalo says an eSIM can usually be installed only once; a drop mid-download fails the profile. Validity often starts when the line attaches at the destination — read Package details. A few packs start at install.
From checkout to data
-
1
Sign in and pick the destination
Open airalo.com or the Airalo app from the App Store or Google Play. Log in or sign up at the top right; new accounts may need an email code. Open Store / eSIM Store. Search a country, or browse local, regional, and global packs. One country: local. Several countries in one trip: regional or global.
-
2
Read data, days, and voice, then pay
Match GB and validity to the trip. Most packs are data-only; look for a Data/Calls/Texts toggle if you need a number. Official payment options are credit or debit card, PayPal, and in-app Airmoney. Tap Buy Now and pay with a method you own. Do not use a stranger’s card or a “bypass” seller.
-
3
Install from the official instructions
In the app: My eSIMs → the pack you bought → View details → Ready to use your eSIM → Install or share. For this phone tap Start installation (Direct). QR or manual SM-DP+ plus activation code sit under Share and more. Label the line, for example
Japan eSIM, so it is not confused with the home SIM. -
4
At the destination, enable the line, data, and roaming
Open How to connect on the same pack. iPhone: Settings → Cellular / Mobile Service → turn the line on → Data Roaming if the sheet asks → set Cellular Data to the Airalo eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → enable the eSIM, mobile data, and Data Roaming if required. No attach: reboot, or toggle Airplane Mode for about 10 seconds.
-
5
Turn off home-carrier data so you are not billed twice
Dual SIM can stay on: home line for calls and SMS, Airalo for data. Disable the home carrier’s mobile data or you may still roam. If a regional or global pack includes your home country, do not attach it before you travel or validity can start early.
Which install path
| Method | Use when | Where to tap |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | Airalo app is on this phone and the OS can add an eSIM in one flow | Install or share → Start installation |
| QR code | You show the code on another screen, or you bought on the website | Share and more |
| Manual | Direct failed, or Settings only accepts SM-DP+ and an activation code | Share and more → paste into Add eSIM |
Airalo Help: buy on airalo.com or the official app; new accounts may need an email code; install steps live under My eSIMs → View details → Install or share; network steps are How to connect on the same page.
# Airalo travel eSIM checklist
1. Unlocked + eSIM-capable (*#06# / Add eSIM)
2. airalo.com or official iOS/Android app
3. Store → country or local/regional/global
4. Pay: card / PayPal / Airmoney (your own)
5. Wi-Fi → My eSIMs → Install or share
6. Label line → data line + roaming if required
7. Turn OFF home-carrier mobile data
- Most packs are data-only, not a new phone number
- If there is no Data/Calls/Texts toggle, use WhatsApp or iMessage on data. Keep the home SIM for SMS codes.
- If install fails, check lock and Wi-Fi before scanning again
- A locked phone will fail. Do not mash Direct after an error. Switch to QR or manual as the app shows, or use in-app chat.
- APN is usually pushed automatically
- If you have signal bars but no pages, open How to connect and check APN and preferred network. Multi-network packs can be selected manually in Settings.
Once the phone has data, a short alignment does not need another meeting client. Create a no-account room on the wbroom homepage. Steps: create and join a room. Mic permissions: voice and camera tips. When a heavy suite is the wrong length: when not to use Zoom and browser standup.
Still checking?
Must I install before I fly?
Airalo recommends installing on Wi-Fi before the trip. Most packs start validity when they attach at the destination — read Package details. Install itself needs a network; doing it at the gate is more likely to fail.
Can I keep my home SIM and Airalo on at once?
Yes. Airalo says most phones can keep the physical or home line for calls and SMS and use the eSIM for data. Turn the home carrier’s mobile data off so you are not billed for roaming.
What if data runs out or the days end?
Open Package details and see if Top up is offered. If it is, refill the same eSIM in the app. If not, buy another pack. How long you have after purchase to start the eSIM is under Provider activation policy.
What if this phone has no eSIM?
Airalo says you can still buy and share the profile to another eSIM-capable device. Do not keep tapping install on a phone that cannot store an eSIM. Do not buy a gray-market physical SIM or a proxy-KYC service.
