What is TCL P80 Ultra: 2026 NxtPaper OLED explained

TCL finally put NxtPaper on OLED during the IFA week. Here are the checkable specs, the three-phone split, and how this differs from older LCD paper phones.

On 3 September 2026 TCL put the P80 series on sale in Europe. The lead phone, P80 Ultra, is the company’s first NxtPaper handset with an OLED panel instead of another LCD paper display.

The searchable event is the TCL P80 Ultra: a 6.83-inch NxtPaper AMOLED at 1.5K, 120Hz, and 3,200 nits peak. The Verge, GSMArena, and Notebookcheck filed the same day. TCL had shown OLED NxtPaper at MWC in March 2026 without a shipping phone.

What the launch materials say

Day to day the Ultra is a normal Android phone. Flip the side key into Max Ink and the panel goes monochrome and paper-like, the UI drops most apps and notifications, and reader software takes over. TCL says that mode can take the 5,800mAh cell to about seven days of use, or up to 26 days on standby.

How to read the specs

  1. 1

Split the line by who has NxtPaper

Ultra and Pro get the NxtPaper OLED and the side key. The base P80 still uses a 6.83-inch 1.5K 120Hz OLED, but The Verge says it drops NxtPaper—the series’ main reason to exist.

  2. 2

Treat the chip and cameras as upper midrange

Ultra and Pro use Dimensity 7400 Elite, 8GB RAM, and 256 or 512GB. The Ultra adds a 50MP 3x periscope. That is a strong midrange kit, not the year’s flagship SoC.

  3. 3

Read availability as a staggered rollout

Europe went on sale 3 September. Latin America is listed for October. TCL told The Verge the US is “a bit later,” with no date. Notebookcheck saw the Ultra on Amazon.de at about €549 for 256GB and €599 for 512GB.

01

Paper mode moved from LCD to OLED

Older NxtPaper phones were LCD. Ultra and Pro put the matte stack and Max Ink on AMOLED. Brightness and color are written in flagship language; the rest of the phone is still midrange.

02

Do not collapse three SKUs into one

Pro loses the telephoto. The base P80 switches to Dimensity 7300 Elite, a smaller battery, and no NxtPaper. The price gap is a feature cut, not only storage.

03

Software-year counts disagree

The Verge: about four OS years and seven security years for Ultra and Pro; the base model loses one OS year. 9to5Google wrote seven OS years for the Ultra. Trust the box and the local support page.

Limits

“First” means NxtPaper on OLED, not the first OLED phone
Coverage is about TCL’s paper line moving to OLED. OLED phones have been common for years.
A Europe on-sale day is not a global day-and-date
LatAm is listed for October. The US has no date. Bundles (some markets include a charger) follow the local retail page.
The seven-day claim is tied to Max Ink
That is a vendor figure for the mono reader mode, not a third-party rundown of high-refresh color use.

Questions worth checking

Does the cheap P80 still have paper reading?

Not according to The Verge. It keeps OLED but drops NxtPaper and the side key.

Is the battery 5,800 or 6,800mAh?

The Verge’s hands-on and the GSMArena spec sheet say 5,800mAh. 9to5Google wrote 6,800mAh. This article follows the first two and notes the split.

When can US buyers order one?

TCL told The Verge “a bit later,” with no date. Europe is on sale now; Latin America is listed for October.
